Charles Edwin Oates, also known as Mr. Charlie ,83, of Village Mills passed away on Wednesday April 6, 2022. There will be a visitation at 11 a.m. followed by a Memorial service at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee.
Mr. Oates was born on September 15,1938 in San Antonio to Calvin and Edith (Wilson) Oates. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur. He was married to Linda Cocke and had three children, Mark Edwin Oates, Michael Wayne Oates and Brad William Oates. Charles later married Kay Dartez Moore who had three children from a previous marriage, Cory Moore, Lori Moore-Allen, and Mary Kay Moore.
In 1956, Charles enlisted in the 476th Engineer Battalion of the Army Reserve. He began his career at Texaco before becoming a supervisor at E.I. du Pont de Nemours where he worked for 32 years. While at DuPont, in 1978 he and Kay moved to Silsbee where they owned and operated Oates’ Country Corner for over 30 years. Adding to the store was The Snack Shack featuring Kay’s special hamburger recipe. It proved to be a huge success. They took great pride in their business and the customers they served.
Charles is preceded in death by his son, Mark Edwin Oates; wife, Kay Oates; parents, Calvin and Edith Oates; sister, Linda Beth DeCuir and her husband Charles McCloy DeCuir. Those left to cherish his memory are children, Michael Oates and his wife Pam of Buna, Brad Oates of Conroe, Cory Moore, Lori Moore-Allen and her husband Jeff, Mary Moore and her husband T.J. Milling, all of Austin and niece Chrissy DeCuir of Houston. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Wade Oates of New York, Joshua Oates of Lumberton, Leanna Jasper and Rosemary Powell of Woodville, Dawson Moore, Scarlett and Emmanuelle Milling of Austin, and great grandchildren, Aaron, Lily, Isaiah, Max, Faith and Olivia.
