On Sunday, October 26th, 2025, George Douglas Buxton passed away peacefully at the age of 78.
George was born on November 26th, 1946, in Bessmay, TX, to parents Tom Foley Buxton and Theresa (Mosteit) Buxton. The youngest of five children, he was raised to be a man of charming manners, sharp mind, and strong work ethic. As an intelligent young man, he pursued higher education at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX, and later at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business.
George went on to serve his country with honor for eleven years—six in the National Guard and five in the Army Reserves—rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class. Professionally, he dedicated himself to the paper mill industry as a maintenance supervisor. His career began at Temple Inland in Evadale, TX, and later continued at Graphic Packaging International in Kalamazoo, Michigan. George took great pride in his work and recalled his time at the paper mills fondly.
Beyond his work and military service, George enjoyed turkey and deer hunting, listening to country music, and studying Civil War history. In his later years, he settled in Lumberton, TX, where he valued closeness to loved ones. In remembering George, we honor a life of integrity, hard work, and devotion to family.
George is survived by his two sons, Demetrios (Solange) and Brandon (Kathryn); his stepdaughter, Sabrina Miller; and six grandchildren: Ian, Athena, Michael, Meera, and Noah Buxton; and Yannis Tekeu. He is also survived by his sister, Geraldine Webb, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Reginald "Sonny" Buxton, and sisters, Bobbie J. Hinson and Bernice D. Welty.
George always had a heart to care for the less fortunate. For those wishing, memorial gifts may be made to the Christian Care Center (415 W Ave. P, Silsbee, TX 77656). Flowers may be sent to Good Shepherd Baptist Church (3700 FM 92 North, Silsbee, TX 77656) where funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 1st, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, interment will take place at Antioch Cemetery in Buna, TX.
