Roger Kerr Obituary

Roger Victor Kerr, 53, of Kirbyville, TX, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023 after a courageous 5 year battle with lung cancer.

Roger was born on April 16, 1969 to Liv and Bobby Dave Kerr in Stavanger, Norway. He was the 2nd son of Liv and Bobby as they had his brother, Dorvil, only the year before. Bobby died when Roger was only 1 year old when they had just moved to Newton, Texas. Liv then married William Patrick “Pat” Kennedy who became Dad or “Fatrick” as Roger called him. Liv and Pat had a baby sister, Kari Ellen, for Roger and Dorvil when they were 6 and 7 years old.

The family moved to Kirbyville when Roger was in 2nd grade. Roger and Dorvil spent lots of time with their paternal aunt and uncle, Polly and R.C. “Unk” Powell. Hunting in South TX, fishing at Lake Toledo Bend or at the farm or woods in Holly Springs were among their favorite activities. Roger enjoyed playing tennis in high school and hanging out with his classmates in the Kirbyville High School Class of 1987. After graduation, he attended Stephen F. Austin University for 3 years and had fantastic times with friends he made there.

Roger then returned to Jasper County and worked for LP Industries for 5 years and offshore for 2 years. Roger gained employment with BNSF Railways in Silsbee, TX in 1998. In 2004, he decided to transfer to another BNSF railyard in Slaton, TX. His brother, Dorvil, owned a business close by in Snyder, TX and they spent time together hunting and fishing. He made several buddies on the railroad over the years as well. Roger worked for BNSF Railways for over 20 years in total.

In April of 2008, Roger welcomed a son, Anderson “Andy” Robert Kerr, named after his best friend, Andy Horn and his “Unk”. Andy became the center of Roger’s world. Roger moved to Lubbock, TX the next year and bought a house for he and Andy to live in. Roger and Andy hunted, fished and played sports together. They recently returned to his hometown of Kirbyville when he knew it was “time”.  Roger passed peacefully at his home and is no longer in pain.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Dave Kerr; mother, Liv Kennedy; stepfather, William Patrick “Pat” Kennedy; brother, Doyle Dorvil Kerr; uncle, Robert Carl “R.C.” Powell and aunt, Pauline “Polly” Powell.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Anderson “Andy” Robert Kerr; sister, Kari Ellen Sheffield and husband, Darrell; niece, Kayla Kerr Ramsey and husband, Chance; niece, Sidney Duckworth; nephew, William Gellner; and great-niece, Shaylen Ramsey and numerous cousins. Roger’s family in Norway include his aunt, Cecilie Horn and husband, Hans Iver and aunt, Siv Jansen and husband, Steinar and several cousins.

Roger had great friends whom he regarded as family including Andy and Tami Horn, Chad and Melissa Havard, Bryan and Alicia McCurley and Scott “Tex” McNeal. Roger had special nicknames for his family and friends that will never be forgotten. Many thanks to Olive Branch Hospice for providing excellent care physically and spiritually to Roger at the end of his life.
